Havana Club Anejo Especial Rum: Review & Tasting Notes
About Havana Club Especial Rum
Havana Club Especial Rum consists of a blend of rums aged up to 5 years. The constituent rums are aged in former bourbon barrels before a secondary ageing in Irish whiskey barrels.
The Havana Club brand was created in 1934 by the Arechabala Distillery which was established in 1878. Following the Cuban Revolution the company was nationalised without compensation in 1960 and the Cuban government began exporting the rum internationally in 1972. Since 1994 Havana Club has operated as a 50/50 joint venture between the Cuban government and Pernod Ricard. Barcardi also produce rum in Puerto Rico under the Havana Club brand (after extensive trademark battles with Pernod Ricard), primarily for the US market. World Rum Guide Review Havana Club Especial is a light amber rum with bold flavour while maintaining the typically light characteristics of Cuban rum. For an affordable, entry-level mixing rum, it is pleasingly smooth. There's a backbone of cinnamon, orange peel, oak and tobacco, however creamy vanilla and honey take centre stage and deliver a notable sweetness - ideal for a Cuba Libre. - Paul Jackson, 2018 |
