Santa Teresa 1796 Rum: Review & Tasting Notes
About Santa Teresa 1796 Rum
Santa Teresa 1796 Rum was created in 1996 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Hacienda Santa Teresa Distillery in Venezuala. This Spanish-style rum is the product of blending three rums aged between 5 years and 35 years in oak bourbon barrels, then further aged using a solera system.
The Santa Teresa estate was founded in 1796, but rum production only began in the late 19th Century under the management of Venezuelan Panchita Ribas and her German husband Gustav Vollmer. Five generations later, the Vollmer family still owns the estate, which lies in the Aragua Valley, near Caracas. World Rum Guide Review Santa Teresa 1796 is amber red in colour with the typically complex aromas and taste of a solera rum. Aromas of caramel, molasses and vanilla are followed by a smooth arrival on the palate that starts sweet and then turns slightly bitter, with notes of molassas, cinnamon, vanilla and honey, balanced with tobacco and dark chocolate notes. The finish is long and layered with peppery notes. Best enjoyed neat, on the rocks or in a Rum Old Fashioned. - Carl Jackson, 2019 |
