New Figures Show Big Increase In UK Rum Sales

Rum sales surged by 7% in 2019 – a rise driven by cocktails and new spiced and flavoured rums, according to food and drink analysts CGA.

In the same period, brandy and whisky sales rose by about 3% and 1% respectively, and vodka sales actually fell by 0.4%.
The latest figures continue a trend of increased demand for rum. According to the Wine and Spirit Trade Association, UK sales of spiced and flavoured rum have grown by 80% over the last 5 years.

For the first time ever, more than 5 million UK consumers drank rum outside the home - a 10% year on year increase.
Although rum is being talked about as the “next gin”, the growth in spirits sales is still being driven by gin, which has seen its on-trade sales more than triple in the last 5 years.

With all UK pubs, bars and restaurants closed for the last month and due to be closed for at least another 3 weeks, on trade sales growth looks impossible this year. We will have to wait for new retail sales figures to see if rum’s popularity continues to grow in the UK.
